Elementary question

November 4th, 2009

A typical criticism of schooling is that it gets everyone to learn material at the same pace, and so people at either ends of the learning curve suffer because of it.

A conversation with Nelson on his blog about primary and secondary schooling prompted me to start wondering the following question:

Why do elementary schools teach all the pupils the same things?

It’s as if the students all had the same interests, aptitudes, inclinations … but obviously they don’t.
